Wainscoting costs $10 to $40 per square foot installed (HomeGuide), and Angi puts the average whole job at $1,325.1,2 Fixr is higher at a $3,600 average, based on a 12 by 12 ft mahogany example.3 Prices below are national averages* for 2026.

*National averages, not local quotes. Your price depends on the panel style, material, how many walls you cover and whether it arrives painted.

Work out your square footage

HomeGuide says wainscoting is usually one-third of the wall height, about 3 to 3.5 feet in most homes.1 Multiply the room’s perimeter by the panel height, then subtract doors and windows. Our math for two common rooms at 3 feet high, before any door or window deductions:

Room Perimeter Panel area At $10 – $40 per sq ft (HomeGuide) At $15 – $20 per sq ft (Fixr)
8 x 10 ft 36 ft 108 sq ft $1,080 – $4,320 $1,620 – $2,160
12 x 12 ft 48 ft 144 sq ft $1,440 – $5,760 $2,160 – $2,880

Check the sources’ own examples before relying on them. HomeGuide says a 3-foot wainscot in an 8 by 10 ft room costs $2,400 to $9,600, but that is about 240 sq ft at its own per-foot rates, more than twice the 108 sq ft we get above.1 Angi says most homeowners pay “$1,575 and $1,600” yet gives a $1,050 to $2,400 range and a $1,325 average on the same page.2 Treat the per-square-foot rates as the firmer numbers.

Labor and extras

Item Cost Source
Labor $70 – $100 per hour HomeGuide
Contractor $50 – $125 per hour Angi
Carpenter $30 – $100 per hour HomeGuide
Painting interior trim $1 – $4 per linear foot HomeGuide
Other interior trim $4 – $10 per sq ft HomeGuide

Pre-painted or stained panels cost more than unfinished ones, and premade panels from hardware stores can cost more per square foot than raw lumber but go up faster, per HomeGuide.1 Angi says full raised panels cost more than rails-only wainscoting, which is painted straight onto the wall and is easier to DIY.2

DIY or hire

Angi calls wainscoting a reasonable DIY job if you are comfortable measuring, cutting and fastening, and lists the prep: mark the wall, remove baseboards, find studs for heavy wood panels, fill holes and prime.2 HomeGuide points DIYers to premade panels to shorten the job.1 Home Depot’s wainscoting section lists current panel kits (plain link, not affiliate).
