Gas line installation costs $260 to $2,000 for most projects, or $15 to $50 per linear foot.123 Extending an existing line for one appliance runs $350 to $800; a new service line from the street is $2,000 to $10,000+ (HomeGuide).2 Thumbtack’s project data shows most people paying around $470.4 Prices below are national averages* for 2026.

*National averages, not local quotes. Your price depends on line length, material, trenching vs. boring, and which side of the meter the work is on.

$2,000 – $10,000+

new service from street, HomeGuide

Quick math: check any per-foot quote against the totals: 25 feet at $15 to $25 (simple) = $375 to $625, and Fixr’s $800 average for exactly that job fits once fittings and the shut-off valve are in.23 Angi’s $15 to $25 per foot and HomeGuide’s $15 to $50+ do not disagree — Angi prices typical underground runs, HomeGuide spans simple ($15 to $25) to complex ($35 to $50+).12

Cost by project type

Project Cost (HomeGuide) What it covers
Extend existing line $350 – $800 Tap existing line for one nearby appliance (10–30 ft)
Single appliance from meter $500 – $2,000 New line, meter to one appliance
Multiple appliances $1,200 – $3,000 Lines to 2–3 appliances
Whole-house conversion $2,200 – $7,500 Interior lines for 4+ appliances
New service line from street $2,000 – $10,000+ Main to meter, plus meter install

Thumbtack splits the same boundary differently: hooking an appliance to an existing line averages $243 to $823, while supplying a new line for appliances runs $431 to $1,609.4 Angi’s $260 to $820 typical range describes the smaller jobs; its $120 to $1,350 full range covers most residential work.1

Cost per linear foot

Line length Simple ($15 – $25/ft) Complex ($35 – $50+/ft)
10 ft $150 – $250 $350 – $500+
20 ft $300 – $500 $700 – $1,000+
30 ft $450 – $750 $1,100 – $1,500+
50 ft $750 – $1,300 $1,800 – $2,500+
100 ft $1,500 – $2,500 $3,500 – $5,000+

Fixr prices the work type instead: extension $10 to $20 per foot, new install $15 to $25, relocation $15 to $25, replacement $23 to $35 (old line removal included).3 Furnace lines sit at the top of the per-foot band ($20 to $25) because they need larger pipe; water heater lines run $10 to $18.3

Pipe materials

Material Material cost per ft (HomeGuide) Notes
HDPE (polyethylene) $1 – $3 Preferred underground; corrosion-resistant
Copper $2 – $6 Restricted for gas in some areas
CSST (flexible stainless) $2 – $10 Easy install; needs bonding/grounding
Galvanized steel $3 – $9 High-pressure, indoor/outdoor above-ground
Black iron $5 – $10 Traditional interior choice

Materials are a small slice of the bill — labor dominates, which is why complex routing doubles the per-foot price even on cheap pipe, our judgment from the per-foot tables.12

Cost by appliance

Appliance Thumbtack average range
Outdoor BBQ / grill $303 – $1,030
Dryer $318 – $1,081
Furnace $349 – $1,188
Fireplace $357 – $1,215
Water heater / boiler $357 – $1,215
Stove / oven $376 – $1,278

Grills and dryers are the cheapest connections; anything needing a long run or bigger pipe (stoves, fire pits) lands higher.4

Street side vs. your side of the meter

Everything from the main to the meter is the utility company’s job — often free when the meter is within about 100 feet of the street; you pay only for the excess distance and restoring your landscaping (Fixr).3 The meter itself is $250 to $425 when not included.3 From the meter inward, it is your plumber’s work: interior lines for three to four appliances run $1,250 to $1,600, hookups $220 to $350, shut-off valves $210 to $500 (Fixr).3

Trenching vs. directional boring

Open trenching costs $5 to $15+ per linear foot and disrupts landscaping; horizontal directional drilling (HDD) costs $10 to $30 per foot but goes under driveways and established yards without excavation (HomeGuide).2 HDD often nets out cheaper once landscape restoration counts, our judgment. Permits run $100 to $300 (Angi).1

Worked examples

Example 1 — extend a line 15 feet for a dryer. Simple interior run: 15 × $15 to $25 = $225 to $375, our arithmetic; HomeGuide’s extension band ($350 to $800) adds fittings and the shut-off.23

Example 2 — new 25-ft furnace line. 25 × $20 to $25 = $500 to $625, our arithmetic; Fixr’s $800 national average for exactly this job adds the valve and fittings.3

Example 3 — electric-to-gas kitchen conversion. New line for a stove ($376 to $1,278, Thumbtack) + underground run at complex rates if routed outside.24 Budget $100 to $300 for the permit (Angi).1

FAQ

Can I install a gas line myself? No. Licensed pros only — a bad connection is a leak-and-explosion risk, and permits plus inspection are required (Angi).1

Who pays for the line from the street? Usually the utility, up to about 100 feet; beyond that you pay the difference, plus your own landscaping restoration (Fixr).3

Why do some quotes price per foot and others per project? Per-foot suits simple runs; project pricing bundles fittings, valves, and complexity. Convert both to per-foot equivalents before comparing, our advice.

Does CSST save money? Often on labor — it snakes through framing with fewer fittings — but it requires bonding and grounding for lightning protection (HomeGuide).2

How do I know if I have a leak? Smell of rotten eggs, hissing, or dying vegetation over a buried line; leave the house and call the utility first, then a pro (Angi).1

DIY shopping: gas leak detectors (plain link, no affiliate relationship) — the one purchase every gas home should make; the piping itself is licensed-pro work, no exceptions.
