How many boxes of laminate flooring do I need? A 12 ft by 12 ft room is 144 square feet. The cited Pergo laminate guide says to add 10% to your square footage for standard installations and 15% for diagonal ones.1 That is 158.4 square feet of laminate for a straight layout, or 8 boxes if each box covers 20 square feet. The chart below covers six room sizes.
The formula
- Area (sq ft) = length (ft) x width (ft). Add closets or hall areas that get the same floor.
- Area with waste = area x 1.10 for a standard installation, or x 1.15 for a diagonal one.1
- Boxes = area with waste / sq ft per box, rounded up. The coverage is printed on the box. Whole boxes only.
Chart: boxes of laminate by room size
Boxes assume 20 sq ft per box. That is an example, so check your box.
| Room size | Area | Standard (+10%) | Boxes | Diagonal (+15%) | Boxes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 10 ft | 100 sq ft | 110 sq ft | 6 | 115 sq ft | 6 |
| 10 x 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 132 sq ft | 7 | 138 sq ft | 7 |
| 12 x 12 ft | 144 sq ft | 158.4 sq ft | 8 | 165.6 sq ft | 9 |
| 12 x 15 ft | 180 sq ft | 198 sq ft | 10 | 207 sq ft | 11 |
| 15 x 20 ft | 300 sq ft | 330 sq ft | 17 | 345 sq ft | 18 |
| 20 x 20 ft | 400 sq ft | 440 sq ft | 22 | 460 sq ft | 23 |
Each number is area x 1.10 or 1.15, divided by 20 and rounded up. For a different box size, divide the “with waste” number by your coverage.
Worked example 1: a 12 x 12 ft bedroom
- Area: 12 x 12 = 144 sq ft.
- With 10%: 144 x 1.10 = 158.4 sq ft.
- Boxes at 20 sq ft: 158.4 / 20 = 7.92, so 8 boxes (160 sq ft).
Worked example 2: the same room laid on the diagonal
- With 15%: 144 x 1.15 = 165.6 sq ft.
- Boxes at 20 sq ft: 165.6 / 20 = 8.28, so 9 boxes (180 sq ft).
Same room, one more box, because diagonal cuts waste more material.1
Worked example 3: a 14 x 16 ft room with a different box size
- Area: 14 x 16 = 224 sq ft.
- With 10%: 224 x 1.10 = 246.4 sq ft.
- Say each box covers 22.5 sq ft (an example). 246.4 / 22.5 = 10.95, so 11 boxes (247.5 sq ft).
Here the rounding leaves only 1.1 sq ft beyond the 10% allowance, so you have very little extra. An additional box is a separate layout decision, not an automatic requirement. Check whether the planned cuts and usable offcuts fit before choosing it.
What else to plan for
- Acclimation: Pergo says to lay planks flat in unopened cartons, at least two feet from walls, for at least 48 hours, and 96 hours in very dry or very humid climates.1
- Expansion space: Pergo calls for a 3/8 inch gap around the perimeter, so the floor can move with temperature and humidity.1
- Moisture barrier: The cited Pergo guide requires a 6-mil polyethylene vapor barrier or equivalent when installing over concrete. It does not require one on top of a wood subfloor. Follow the exact product and subfloor instructions; do not turn the concrete rule into a blanket rule for every floor.1 Other brands have their own rules, so read yours.
- Trim: transitions and wall trim are counted separately from the planks.1
Box coverage changes the count
The 20-square-foot cartons in the room-size chart are examples, not a universal package. Read the exact coverage for your product. For a measured 200-square-foot floor at 10% extra, the target is 220 square feet. Our calculations below show how that same target becomes different whole-box counts.
| Example carton coverage | Exact box quotient | Whole boxes | Purchased coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18 sq ft | 12.2222 | 13 | 234 sq ft |
| 20 sq ft | 11.0000 | 11 | 220 sq ft |
| 22.5 sq ft | 9.7778 | 10 | 225 sq ft |
| 24 sq ft | 9.1667 | 10 | 240 sq ft |
Purchased coverage minus the allowance-adjusted target is rounding surplus. It is not another waste percentage. At 22.5 square feet per box, ten boxes provide 225 square feet, just 5 above the 220 target. Do not subtract the 10% allowance back out because whole boxes leave a remainder.
Measure irregular rooms and shared areas
Split an L-shaped floor into nonoverlapping rectangles, add their areas and apply the allowance to the total. For example, 12 x 10 feet plus 6 x 4 feet = 144 square feet. At 10% extra and example 20-square-foot boxes: 144 x 1.10 / 20 = 7.92, so eight boxes. Include the closets and hall sections receiving the same floor, and avoid counting overlaps twice.
If several rooms use the same product and usable material can be shared, total the areas before carton rounding. If rooms need different products, separate lots or different allowances, calculate each group separately. The flooring calculator takes one rectangle at a time and shows the exact quotient plus whole-box coverage; it does not optimize a multi-room plank layout.
Use the instructions for your exact product
The source is a combined Pergo laminate guide with a separate Outlast+ section. Its waste example is useful for this takeoff, but its preparation, acclimation, underlayment and expansion instructions are product-specific.1 Do not apply those numbers automatically to every current laminate, vinyl or hardwood product. Check the installation sheet supplied with the flooring you actually buy.
This guide counts boxes only. It does not specify a subfloor moisture limit, prove that the floor is flat enough, choose trim, or determine whether a room needs transitions. Those checks are separate from area math. A higher box count cannot fix the wrong product or an unsuitable installation site.
Common mistakes
- Using the room area with no waste. The last piece in each row, and every cut around doors and jambs, comes out of your total.
- Forgetting that boxes are whole units. Always round up.
- Mixing lots. Buy every box together and check the lot numbers.
- Skipping closets and hallways that get the same floor.
FAQ
How many boxes of laminate for 200 square feet?
With 10% waste you need 220 sq ft. At 20 sq ft per box that is 11 boxes exactly.
How much waste for laminate flooring?
Pergo says 10% for standard installs and 15% for diagonal ones.1
Does the 10% apply to vinyl plank too?
This guide only cites laminate rules from Pergo. Check your vinyl plank maker for its own number.
