For a 6 × 9-inch rectangular module, 144 / (6 × 9) = 2.666667 pavers per square foot. That is a geometric estimate, not proof of coverage for every product called “6×9.” Use the actual product’s stated installed coverage when available, check joint and pattern assumptions, then add a separately chosen allowance and round only at the end.
The formula and its limits
Pieces per sq ft = 144 / (module length in inches × module width in inches).
Pieces with allowance = round up [net paving area × pieces per sq ft × (1 + allowance % / 100)]. A rectangular repeating module may include joint space. Bare stone dimensions, nominal names and installed module dimensions are not automatically the same.
If the product lists pieces and square feet per pallet, pieces per stated sq ft = pieces per pallet / stated sq ft per pallet. Confirm that the quoted coverage applies to your pattern and joints. Do not add joints a second time to coverage that already accounts for them; do not assume it accounts for them when the source does not say so.
Geometric chart: rectangular modules
These dimensions are assumed repeating modules, not verified specifications for named paver products. No cut allowance. The 100-sq-ft column rounds up the full-precision result. Small borders and course layouts can require a different count.
| Assumed module (in) | Sq in/module | Pieces/sq ft | Pieces/100 sq ft, rounded up |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 × 4 | 16 | 9.000000 | 900 |
| 4 × 8 | 32 | 4.500000 | 450 |
| 6 × 6 | 36 | 4.000000 | 400 |
| 6 × 9 | 54 | 2.666667 | 267 |
| 8 × 8 | 64 | 2.250000 | 225 |
| 12 × 12 | 144 | 1.000000 | 100 |
| 12 × 24 | 288 | 0.500000 | 50 |
| 16 × 16 | 256 | 0.562500 | 57 |
For the assumed 16 × 16-inch module, 100 × 144 / 256 = 56.25, so the rounded count is 57, not 56. Do not multiply by a shortened 0.56-per-square-foot value and round down.
A product sheet is better than its name
The cited Pavestone Vintage Stone 6×9 60 mm, product 290 sheet lists dimensions 5.91 × 8.86 inches, 300 units and 109 sq ft per pallet.1 The bare-face calculation is 144 / (5.91 × 8.86) = 2.750054 pieces/sq ft. The pallet ratio is 300 / 109 = 2.752294 pieces per stated sq ft. They are close, but not equal.
The sheet does not establish the joint allowance behind its coverage figure. The earlier inference that a close dimensional match proved joints were included was not justified. For purchasing, use the applicable supplier/product coverage and verify the intended pattern, joints and sales increments. Do not silently substitute a rounded 2.75 ratio for 300 / 109.
Three checked examples
1. A 12 × 12-foot patio, using product coverage
Net area = 144 sq ft. With the cited 300-unit/109-sq-ft pallet ratio: 144 × 300 / 109 = 396.330275 unit equivalents, rounded up to 397 units. With a separately chosen 10% example allowance: 144 × 1.10 × 300 / 109 = 435.963303, rounded up to 436 units. The allowance is a scenario, not a recommendation from the sheet.
If only whole pallets are sold, the area with that example allowance is 158.4 sq ft. 158.4 / 109 = 1.453211 pallets, rounded up to 2 pallets, or 600 units and 218 sq ft of stated coverage. Confirm stock, partial-pallet sales and return terms; the sheet does not establish those store policies.
2. Weight of those two pallets
The same sheet lists 3,024 lb per pallet and says weights are approximate and exclude the shipping pallet.1 Two product pallets therefore represent about 6,048 lb of pavers, or 3.024 US short tons, before pallet and other packaging weight. This does not approve a vehicle’s payload or a delivery method. Confirm the full shipped load and unloading plan.
3. A 3 × 20-foot path with an assumed 12 × 12 module
Area = 60 sq ft. At exactly one repeating module per square foot: 60 units geometrically. With example 10% allowance: 66 units. This result assumes a true installed 12 × 12-inch module; it is not a verified takeoff for every paver sold as 12×12. Check rows, edges and the actual product coverage.
Cuts, borders and mixed-size packs
The installation guide hosted by Mid-Atlantic Concrete Products discusses cutting pavers where they meet a soldier-course border.2 A total-area formula does not tell you the border unit count, cut layout or reusable offcuts. Count field and border areas without overlap; identify any separate border product.
For mixed-size or pattern packs, use the coverage of the complete specified pack and its pattern proportions. Do not apply one shape’s pieces-per-square-foot figure to the whole pattern. Confirm which quantities are sold as individual units, layers, bundles or pallets.
Before ordering
- Measure net paving area and subtract areas that will not be paved. Do not subtract a fire feature or planter if the plan actually requires paving beneath it.
- Confirm installed coverage, pattern and joints for the exact product. Label geometric module estimates as estimates.
- Choose an allowance based on the actual cuts and layout; the 10% examples here are not universal rules.
- Round to pieces and then the actual sales increment without rounding intermediate coverage ratios.
- Check approximate paver weight, packaging, delivery and unloading separately. Base and bedding quantities are not paver coverage.
FAQ
How many 6×9 pavers per square foot?
An exact 6 × 9-inch module gives 2.666667. The cited Vintage Stone pallet ratio is 2.752294 per stated square foot. Use the matching product coverage and pattern rather than the name alone.
How many 4×8 pavers per square foot?
An assumed 4 × 8-inch repeating module gives 144 / 32 = 4.5. Actual product and installed coverage need checking.
How many 16×16 pavers for 100 sq ft?
For an exact 16 × 16-inch module, 56.25 unit equivalents round up to 57 before any allowance. A verified layout or different product module can change the count.
Does a pallet coverage figure prove joints are included?
Not by itself. Read the sheet’s coverage definition and confirm it with the supplier. The cited sheet lists coverage but does not state the joint assumption.
