Estimate section counts, hanger points and length-based downspout locations for one continuous gutter run. The 40-foot default with 10-foot sections, a 30-foot planning interval and 2-foot hanger spacing gives 4 sections, 2 provisional downspout locations and 21 hanger points. It does not size drainage capacity. Calculate separate runs separately.

Gutter Calculator

Roof edge
Enter one continuous run. Do not pool disconnected roof edges; rounding and end supports apply to each run.
Common sections come in several lengths. Check what you will buy.
Length-only planning interval, not drainage sizing. Roof area, rainfall, gutter/outlet size and layout can require more locations.
Use the exact system instructions. Our endpoint-spacing model counts both ends; actual end setbacks and joint support can change the count.

One-run quantity estimate only. No hydraulic sizing, joint overlap, cut waste, corners, outlets, end caps, downspout lengths, elbows or connectors are included. Follow your exact system instructions and confirm the drainage layout before buying.

Price the complete gutter layout

The section and hanger counts are a starting point for one run, not a complete gutter order. Confirm the selected system and layout before pricing corners, end caps, outlets, joints, downspout pipe, elbows, brackets and discharge details. The provisional outlet count does not establish drainage capacity or replace a sizing check.

Use our home-improvement planning guide to compare quotes with the same runs, material, access and removal scope. Keep delivery, labor, old-gutter disposal and any repairs separate unless already included. For a seamless-gutter quote, do not treat the nominal packaged-section count as the contractor’s fabrication or billing quantity.

How the gutter quantity math works

Nominal sections = one run length / section length, rounded up.
Provisional downspout locations = one run length / chosen length interval, rounded up.
Hanger points = one run length / chosen maximum spacing, rounded up, plus one. The extra hanger point covers the second end in our simplified endpoint model. These are our counting formulas, not a manufacturer-approved layout.

Enter one continuous run. Disconnected gutters need their own rounding, end supports, outlets and caps. A total for the whole house can hide those requirements. The downspout result is a count of provisional locations only; it is not the number of downspout stock sections or a check of water-carrying capacity.

One-run parts chart

Our calculated table assumes 10-foot nominal gutter sections, a 30-foot provisional downspout interval and 2-foot hanger spacing. These are example inputs, not universal installation instructions. No joint overlap or cut waste is included.

Three checked examples

1. One 40-foot run

Sections: ceil(40 / 10) = 4. Provisional downspout locations: ceil(40 / 30) = 2. Hanger points: ceil(40 / 2) + 1 = 21. This assumes supports at both endpoints. Four 10-foot sections supply exactly 40 nominal feet; overlap, joint trimming or cut waste can mean they do not cover a 40-foot installed run.

2. Two disconnected 15-foot runs

Calculate each run separately. Each needs ceil(15 / 10) = 2 nominal sections, ceil(15 / 30) = 1 provisional downspout location, and ceil(15 / 2) + 1 = 9 hanger points. Totals: 4 sections, 2 locations and 18 hanger points. Pooling them as one 30-foot run would give 3 sections, 1 location and 16 hanger points. That pooled count misses run boundaries. Sharing usable cutoffs between runs needs a separate cutting plan.

3. A 25-foot run with closer hanger spacing

At example 10-foot sections, a 20-foot provisional downspout interval and 1.5-foot hanger spacing: ceil(25 / 10) = 3 sections; ceil(25 / 20) = 2 locations; ceil(25 / 1.5) + 1 = 17 + 1 = 18 hanger points. The 1.5-foot input equals 18 inches. The endpoint formula creates 17 intervals; actual positioning and end setbacks still need the system instructions.

Section length is not always installed coverage

Read the connection detail for your exact gutter system. The Amerimax metal installation sheet distinguishes 5-inch gutter connectors from a 6-inch slide-together detail that cuts 3 inches off the top lip before joining.1 The calculator divides by the nominal section length and does not deduct overlap or joint preparation. Do not assume every 10-foot section adds 10 installed feet.

Count inside and outside corners, left and right caps, seamers or connectors, outlets, elbows, straps and sealant separately. Downspout vertical length depends on height and offsets, not gutter-run length. A seamless gutter quote is normally based on installed run length and its own fabrication details, so a stock-section count may not apply.

Hanger spacing: follow the exact product instructions

The cited Amerimax metal-system sheet calls for a hanger every 24 inches, or 18 inches for heavy ice/snow-load areas.1 Those values belong to that sheet, not every vinyl, steel, aluminum, fascia or roof-mounted system. Our 2-foot default equals its 24-inch example, but it does not verify your product, fastener, fascia condition or loading.

Our count assumes the run can be divided into intervals no longer than your input, with one point at each end. Real instructions can specify different end offsets, additional support near corners or joints and attachment requirements. Check the positions as well as the total count; a correct number of hangers in the wrong places is not a verified installation.

Downspout locations are not drainage capacity

Run length alone cannot size a roof-drainage system. The Amerimax sheet says larger roof areas and heavy-downpour areas can require increasing the size or number of downspouts.1 This form has no roof catchment area, rainfall intensity, pitch, gutter cross-section, outlet capacity or downspout cross-section inputs, so it cannot tell you whether a design will overflow.

Use the provisional count as a sketching prompt only. Check where the roof drains, where each high point and outlet will sit, and how water will leave the site. Confirm the gutter and outlet sizing and rainfall design with the current local requirements and system guidance. Do not treat the default 30 feet per location as a sourced or guaranteed spacing rule.

Slope and discharge

The cited Amerimax metal sheet instructs lowering the layout string approximately 1/4 inch per 10 feet of gutter toward the downspout.1 Under that instruction, a 40-foot one-way run would drop 1 inch. A run split at a high point has separate sloping legs; do not apply the full-run drop to both legs automatically. This calculator does not lay out those slopes.

The same sheet describes an extension or splashblock to direct water farther from the foundation.1 Confirm a safe discharge route without sending water onto a neighboring property or creating an icy walking surface. The form does not check foundation drainage, underground drains or permitted discharge locations.

Metric mode

The unit switch converts all four length inputs to meters, including the provisional downspout interval and hanger spacing. Equivalent metric entries produce the same part counts. The default inputs become 12.192 meters of run, 3.048-meter sections, a 9.144-meter provisional interval and 0.6096-meter hanger spacing (displayed as 0.61 after rounding). Counts stay 4, 2 and 21. Input labels specify meters; product section lengths still need to match what you will buy.

FAQ

Can I enter the entire house perimeter?

Only if it is one continuous run under this simplified model, which a house often is not. Measure the actual roof edges receiving gutters and calculate each independent run separately. A building perimeter is not automatically the gutter length.

Does it include downspout pipe, elbows and straps?

No. The downspout result counts provisional outlet locations, not vertical pipe lengths or fittings. Measure height and offsets and use the product connection details to make a separate downspout list.

Why add one to the hanger count?

A chain of 20 intervals has 21 endpoints. Our model includes both end supports. It does not mean every maker requires hangers precisely at each end; confirm the actual setbacks and supports.

Does this choose a 5-inch or 6-inch gutter?

No. It cannot select gutter or downspout size, approve capacity or determine local-code compliance. Get a drainage layout based on your roof and rainfall before buying parts.

What you’ll need

A plain checklist. Needs vary by project, so follow the instructions on your materials.

  • Gutter sections, end caps and corners – the pieces you counted.
  • Downspouts and elbows – to carry water away.
  • Hangers and fasteners – spaced as the maker says.
  • Gutter sealant – for joints.
  • Safe access plan – a stabilizer alone does not establish ladder safety; follow the ladder instructions and use a qualified installer when the height or site is unsafe.
  • Tin snips or a hacksaw – for trimming.
