Estimate drywall sheets for a room.
How the drywall calculator works
For the default 14 x 12-foot room with 8-foot walls, the wall area is 416 square feet and the ceiling adds 168. Subtract 70 square feet of measured wall openings to get 514 square feet. With a 10% example allowance, 565.4 / 32 = 17.66875, so 18 sheets of 4 x 8 drywall. This is an area estimate for one layer, not a sheet-by-sheet hanging plan.
Walls = 2 x (room length + room width) x wall height.
Ceiling = room length x room width, when included.
Net area = walls + ceiling - measured large wall openings.
Sheets = round up [net area x (1 + extra percent / 100) / sheet area]. Dimensions and areas must use matching units. The sheet-size dropdown stays in its labeled stock units when the room inputs switch to metric.
Which openings should you subtract?
CGC's Sheetrock Installation and Finishing Guide says to measure each wall, subtract large openings such as doorways and picture windows, and ignore small openings such as electrical boxes and pipe fittings.1 Our wall-opening field follows that distinction. Measure the openings you intend to deduct instead of assuming a standard door or window area. Enter zero if you choose not to deduct them.
The guide gives no numerical cutoff for a large opening. Do not invent one. A cutout does not guarantee a reusable offcut, and a big deduction does not prove that fewer whole sheets will fit the layout. The ceiling input assumes a complete flat rectangle; this form does not subtract ceiling openings, count soffits or model sloping planes.
Sheet coverage and a free count chart
A 4 x 8-foot sheet covers 32 square feet; 4 x 10 covers 40; 4 x 12 covers 48. The manufacturer guide includes these panel dimensions and coverage.1 Sheet thickness does not change face area, but thickness, board type and fastening still have to match the required assembly.
| Net surface area | With 10% example extra | 4 x 8 sheets | 4 x 10 sheets | 4 x 12 sheets |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 110.0 sq ft | 4 | 3 | 3 |
| 200 sq ft | 220.0 sq ft | 7 | 6 | 5 |
| 300 sq ft | 330.0 sq ft | 11 | 9 | 7 |
| 400 sq ft | 440.0 sq ft | 14 | 11 | 10 |
| 500 sq ft | 550.0 sq ft | 18 | 14 | 12 |
| 600 sq ft | 660.0 sq ft | 21 | 17 | 14 |
These are our area calculations for one layer. They do not optimize seams or cuts. The larger sheet is not automatically the best choice if it cannot reach the room or fit the hanging plan.
Three checked examples
1. The default room, including the ceiling
Walls: 2 x (14 + 12) x 8 = 416 square feet. Ceiling: 14 x 12 = 168. Net: 416 + 168 - 70 = 514. At 10% extra: 514 x 1.10 = 565.4. At 32 square feet per sheet: 565.4 / 32 = 17.66875, round up to 18 sheets. The 70-square-foot deduction is an example entered total, not a preset claim about every room's openings.
2. A 12 x 10-foot room, walls only
At 8-foot wall height and zero opening deduction: 2 x (12 + 10) x 8 = 352 square feet. Select No for the ceiling. With 10% example extra: 352 x 1.10 = 387.2. At 40 square feet per 4 x 10 sheet: 387.2 / 40 = 9.68, round up to 10 sheets. Including the 120-square-foot ceiling would change the takeoff; do not confuse floor area with wall area.
3. A 20 x 15-foot room using 4 x 12 sheets
At 9-foot wall height: walls = 2 x (20 + 15) x 9 = 630 square feet. Ceiling = 20 x 15 = 300. With a measured 60-square-foot wall-opening deduction: net = 630 + 300 - 60 = 870. At 10% example extra: 870 x 1.10 = 957. At 48 square feet per sheet: 957 / 48 = 19.9375, round up to 20 sheets. Purchased face area is 960 square feet, only 3 beyond the allowance-adjusted target.
Waste allowance is a separate choice
USG's public Sheetrock Wallboard Estimator explicitly says its estimate does not include waste and that other installation methods can use more or less material.2 Our calculator includes an editable allowance and starts at 10% as our example, not a USG or CGC purchasing requirement. Check the actual panel layout, cuts, damage and access before choosing your allowance.
Area rounding and waste are different. First add the chosen percentage to net area, then divide by panel area and round up once. The surplus created by a whole-sheet rounding step is not a second percentage. Multiple layers, different board types and separate rooms need separate takeoffs; do not average sheet sizes into a panel that does not exist.
What this calculator does not choose
The result counts panels only. It does not specify sheet orientation, framing spacing, fire or sound rating, moisture suitability, thickness or a fastening schedule. Use the approved assembly and current product instructions. Tape, compound, screws, corner bead and primer are separate quantities. The manufacturer guide has separate accessory tables; our result does not silently include those materials.1
FAQ
How many 4 x 8 sheets cover 500 square feet?
With no extra: 500 / 32 = 15.625, so 16 sheets by area. With a 10% example allowance: 550 / 32 = 17.1875, so 18 sheets. Layout and usable cuts can change the actual order.
Does the calculator include the ceiling?
Yes when Include ceiling is set to Yes. Choose No for walls only. The default ceiling is a flat length-by-width rectangle, not a vaulted ceiling or several planes.
Can I use metric dimensions?
Yes. The unit switch converts room dimensions and the wall-opening area. The sheet dropdown keeps its labeled stock sizes. Equivalent inputs should produce the same whole-sheet count; avoid entering square feet into a square-meter opening field.
Can I subtract electrical boxes?
The cited CGC guide says not to bother with small electrical and pipe cutouts.1 Use the opening field for measured large wall openings. Small cutouts commonly come out of sheets you still have to hang, so subtracting every little hole can overstate the saving.
Compare the full drywall quote, not only the sheets
Our quote checklist starts with the panel count, then separates the rest of the scope. The calculator is a single-layer area estimate. A sheet subtotal is not the price of a finished room.
- Panels and assembly: confirm the sheet size, thickness, product, number of layers and specified wall or ceiling assembly. The calculator does not select fire, sound or moisture requirements.
- Layout and delivery: ask whether the quote includes a hanging plan, cuts, delivery, carrying sheets into the room and disposal. Compare the same allowance and opening treatment.
- Accessories: list screws or other approved fasteners, tape, joint compound and corner bead separately. They are not included in the sheet result.
- Finish scope: ask what the quote includes for hanging, joint finishing, sanding, texture, primer and paint. State the desired finished surface rather than assuming every quote includes painting.
- Existing surfaces: identify demolition, debris removal, framing repairs and any work around services. Ask how unseen damage or changes to the agreed scope will be priced.
- Final total: check labor, material delivery, equipment, tax and exclusions. Keep panel quantities and the full installed quote separate so a low sheet price does not hide missing work.
Use our home improvement budget and quote checklist to compare line items and record a project contingency. Confirm the required assembly and installation instructions before ordering.

What you'll need
A plain checklist. Needs vary by project, so follow the instructions on your materials.
- Drywall screws - for fastening to studs.
- Joint compound, paper or mesh tape - for the seams.
- Taping knives - a 6 inch and a wider finishing knife.
- Utility knife and T-square - to score and snap sheets.
- Drywall lift or helpers, for ceilings - sheets are heavy and awkward.
- Sanding block or pole and a dust mask - joint compound dust is fine and gets everywhere.
