A 4 × 4-foot inside sandbox filled to a selected 6-inch depth needs 8 cu ft of sand. Using a product with an approximate 0.5-cu-ft yield per bag, that is 16 bags. The cited QUIKRETE Play Sand chart uses 50-lb bags and approximately half a cubic foot per bag.1 Do not assume every 50-lb or 60-lb sand product has that yield.

Measure the inside space and select the fill depth

Use the clear inside dimensions, not the outside frame. Follow the sandbox maker’s fill instructions. The 4-, 6- and 8-inch depths in our chart are calculation choices, not a universal recommended depth. A play-sand quantity chart does not establish protective surfacing requirements for a swing set or other fall area.

The formulas

Rectangle volume (cu ft) = inside length × inside width × selected depth / 12.
Round box volume (cu ft) = π × (inside diameter / 2)² × selected depth / 12.
Bags = round up [volume / product cu ft per bag].
Cubic yards = cu ft / 27. Lengths/diameter are in feet and depth is in inches. Keep unrounded intermediate values through the final bag calculation.

Bag chart at an assumed 0.5 cu ft per bag

Whole bags to meet or exceed geometric volume, before any separately chosen allowance. These are our calculations using the stated approximate yield. They do not promise exact installed coverage.

QUIKRETE’s published chart agrees for the 3-, 4-, 5- and 6-foot boxes except at 4 × 4 feet and 8 inches: it lists 21 bags.1 Our calculation gives 16 × 8 / 12 / 0.5 = 21⅓, so we round up to 22. We preserve that difference rather than attributing 22 to its chart. The source says yields are approximate and exclude waste and uneven subgrade.

The SAKRETE sheet lists its 50-lb package at 6 sq ft × 1 inch deep, consistent with 0.5 cu ft. Its 60-lb package is listed separately at 7 sq ft × 1 inch.2 Do not apply the half-cubic-foot chart to that 60-lb bag or scale volume from pounds alone. This older sheet is dated March 2010; confirm the current package and instructions for the product you buy.

Three checked examples

1. A 4 × 4-foot box at 6 inches

Volume = 4 × 4 × 6 / 12 = 8 cu ft. At approximate 0.5 cu ft per bag, 8 / 0.5 = 16 bags. If those are labeled 50-lb bags, their nominal packaged sand weight totals 800 lb. That is not a transport or structural load approval.

2. A round box 6 feet across at 6 inches

Radius = 3 ft. Area = π × 3² = 28.274334 sq ft. Volume = π × 9 × 0.5 = 14.137167 cu ft. Dividing the unrounded value by 0.5 gives 28.274334 bags, so buy 29 bags. At a nominal 50 lb per bag, that is 1,450 lb of packaged sand.

3. An 8 × 8-foot box at 6 inches, with a separate allowance

Net volume = 8 × 8 × 6 / 12 = 32 cu ft, or 1.185185 cu yd. At approximate 0.5 cu ft per bag, that is 64 bags. With a hypothetical 10% allowance, 32 × 1.10 = 35.2 cu ft, or 1.303704 cu yd; 35.2 / 0.5 = 70.4, so buy 71 bags. Ten percent is an example input, not a published universal spill or settling rate. Reconcile bulk sales increments separately with the supplier.

A note on the SAKRETE worked example

The cited sheet uses 0.33 ft for a 4-inch depth, giving 5.28 cu ft for a 4 × 4-foot box and 11 bags.2 Exact inches-to-feet conversion gives 16 × 4 / 12 = 5⅓ cu ft and 10⅔ half-foot bags, also rounded to 11. Agreement in that count does not make the early-rounded volume exact.

Choose the product, not just the quantity

QUIKRETE describes its cited Play Sand as screened, washed and dried for play boxes.1 The cited SAKRETE Natural Play Sand sheet says it is for use only as play sand, not for other purposes.2 Buy a product intended for the planned use and follow its current label. Do not treat paver bedding sand or construction sand as interchangeable on the basis of volume.

Care and handling from the cited labels

  • QUIKRETE suggests dampening its Play Sand to improve forming/packing and minimize dust, and covering it when not in use to help maintain cleanliness.1
  • The SAKRETE sheet says to cover when not in use to protect against contamination, wash hands after playing, avoid eye contact and use outdoors or with adequate ventilation.2
  • Follow the current product’s full handling instructions. These notes do not claim that a product is dust-free or suitable for every child or installation.

Bagged, bulk and carrying weight

For bulk, confirm the exact product is intended for your planned play use, then match the supplier’s loose volume and sales increment to your quantity. Compare actual fees/access and product specifications; the chart does not prove which option is easier or cheaper. Do not convert a bag’s approximate yield into a universal bulk-sand density.

A bag count can imply a large total load. Check the exact vehicle’s ratings, occupants, other cargo and load containment rather than using a generic pickup class. See the pickup volume and loading guide. Verify the sandbox support/site separately; this quantity guide is not structural design.

FAQ

How much sand for a 4 × 4 sandbox?

At selected depths of 4, 6 and 8 inches, our half-cubic-foot bag calculation gives 11, 16 and 22 bags. That uses clear inside dimensions and excludes a separate allowance. QUIKRETE lists 21 at 8 inches, a chart difference explained above.

How much does one 50-lb bag cover?

For the cited products’ approximately 0.5-cu-ft yield, geometric coverage is 6 sq ft at 1 inch or 1 sq ft at 6 inches. Confirm the exact bag label rather than inferring yield from weight.

Can I use the same chart for 60-lb bags?

Only if the actual package states the same volume, which should not be assumed. The cited SAKRETE sheet gives its 60-lb bag a different coverage figure.
