A plain concrete driveway costs about $5-$8 per sq ft installed on Concrete Network’s national figures, $6-$15 on HomeGuide’s, and $9.59-$11.78 as Homewyse’s basic-work starting point.* Decorative finishes push the same driveway to $8-$21 per sq ft.1 The three references use different scopes, so match your quote to the right one before comparing.

Read the scope before the price
Homewyse’s basic labor description lays out, forms, reinforces, pours and finishes the concrete, but explicitly excludes excavation, the gravel base layer, compaction and demolition.3 Its own asphalt-driveway page includes a gravel base layer, so even one publisher’s scopes differ by surface.3 A bid that looks expensive may simply include the base work. Ask every contractor to show base preparation, thickness and reinforcement as line items.
Thickness and reinforcement move the budget
HomeGuide gives $6-$15 per sq ft for a standard 4-inch slab and $8-$20 for a 6-inch slab it describes as recommended for heavy vehicles, plus $1-$3 per sq ft for rebar.2 It also recommends 4 inches for standard vehicles, 5-6 inches for RVs or regular commercial traffic, and 6-8 inches at the edges.2 Those are one guide’s figures: confirm the thickness and reinforcement your contractor is pricing.
Three checked budget examples
1. A 600 sq ft plain driveway, three references
Concrete Network plain: 600 x $5-$8 = $3,000-$4,800.1 HomeGuide 4-inch: 600 x $6-$15 = $3,600-$9,000.2 Homewyse basic: 600 x $9.59-$11.78 = $5,754-$7,068.3 Homewyse’s band sits inside HomeGuide’s, and both sit above Concrete Network’s plain-figure top end.
2. A 400 sq ft driveway with a basic decorative finish
Concrete Network’s basic decorative band is $8-$14 per sq ft: 400 sq ft = $3,200-$5,600.1 Against its plain figure (400 x $5-$8 = $2,000-$3,200), the decoration roughly doubles the top end of the budget on a small driveway.
3. A 600 sq ft driveway built for a heavy vehicle
At HomeGuide’s 6-inch figure of $8-$20 per sq ft: 600 sq ft = $4,800-$12,000.2 Add rebar at its $1-$3 per sq ft and the materials-and-labor band moves another $600-$1,800. That is why two quotes for “a concrete driveway” can be far apart and both be honest.
Repair or replace?
HomeGuide puts minor concrete driveway repairs such as crack filling at $100-$400+, and says replacement is often more cost-effective when there is extensive cracking, settling or drainage trouble. It also states a quality concrete driveway should last 30 to 40 years with proper maintenance.2 That lifespan claim is HomeGuide’s, not something we verified independently.
Concrete driveway cost FAQ
What is the national average concrete driveway cost?
There is no single agreed average. Concrete Network gives a national project range of $3,200-$13,000,1 HomeGuide gives $2,400-$8,600 total,2 and Homewyse starts basic work at $9.59-$11.78 per sq ft.3 Each covers a different scope.
Does the per-square-foot price include excavation and base work?
Not always. Homewyse’s basic scope explicitly excludes excavation, the gravel base layer, compaction and demolition.3 Ask for these as line items in every quote.
How thick should a concrete driveway be?
HomeGuide recommends at least 4 inches for standard vehicles, 5-6 inches for heavier vehicles, and 6-8 inches at the edges.2 Your contractor’s specification governs the actual build.
