Angi and HomeAdvisor are corporate siblings and publish the same average, range, size table, and per-pound seed prices — matching figures alone don’t establish independent corroboration.1,2 Bob Vila lists Angi, HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide, and LawnStarter among its article sources, so its figures may not be independent of theirs.5

Cost per square foot

Three current per-foot estimates cover reseeding or overseeding an existing lawn: Angi and HomeAdvisor publish $0.10 to $0.20, HomeGuide $0.04 to $0.18, and LawnStarter $0.09 to $0.15.1,2,3,4 Seeding a new lawn on bare ground costs more because of prep work: HomeGuide puts it at $0.25 to $0.70 per square foot including aeration or tilling, fertilizer, and mulch, or $0.07 to $0.22 per square foot without prep work on healthy bare soil.3 HomeAdvisor and Angi put seeding a brand-new lawn at $400 to $1,500 total; Angi’s own seed-versus-sod table shows $450 to $1,800 for the same job — the page publishes both.1,2 Bob Vila’s 2024 guide puts hand seeding a new lawn at $400 to $1,600, or $0.10 to $0.20 per square foot.5

Cost by lawn size

Lawn size Angi / HomeAdvisor (pro) HomeGuide (pro) HomeGuide (DIY, seed only) LawnStarter (pro)
1,000 sq. ft. $100 – $200 $40 – $180 $10 – $20 $90 – $150

1 acre $3,000 – $5,900 $1,700 – $7,800 $440 – $880 $3,920 – $6,534

HomeGuide notes minimum service fees of $125 to $400 apply regardless of lawn size.3

Cost by seeding method

Method (per sq. ft.) Angi HomeGuide LawnStarter
Overseeding with aeration $0.10 – $0.35 (“lawn aeration” — seed inclusion not stated) $0.04 – $0.08 ($200 – $800 total) $0.07 – $0.23
Slice / power seeding $0.09 – $0.18 (power seeding) $0.07 – $0.18 ($350 – $1,800 total) $0.08 – $0.18
Hydroseeding $0.08 – $0.20 ($500 – $4,000 total) $0.07 – $0.22 in its method table; $0.12 – $0.35 in its hydroseeding section ($350 – $2,200 total) $0.07 – $0.21
Seed and straw — $0.07 – $0.15 ($350 – $1,500 total) —

Angi labels its $0.10 to $0.35 figure “lawn aeration” within its seeding-methods table and does not state whether applying seed is included; a separate add-on table on the same page prices aeration alone at $100 to $400.1 HomeGuide’s page carries two hydroseeding rates — $0.07 to $0.22 per square foot in its method table and $0.12 to $0.35 in its hydroseeding section — and does not say which applies when.3 HomeAdvisor also quotes hydroseeding at $500 to $4,000 total, matching Angi’s figure; the two are corporate siblings.1,2 Bob Vila’s 2024 guide puts hydroseeding at $500 to $4,000 as well and sodding a new lawn at an average of $1,850 (with a stated range of $450 to $4,520).5

Grass seed prices per pound

Seed (per lb.) Angi / HomeAdvisor (average) HomeGuide (range) LawnStarter (range)
Bahia $10 $2.50 – $15 $6 – $15
Bermuda $6 $1.50 – $12 $3 – $12
Kentucky bluegrass $6 $7 – $10 $7 – $15
Fescue $3 $1.50 – $10 $2 – $6 (tall fescue); $8 – $14 (fine fescue)
Perennial ryegrass — $2.50 – $9 $3 – $8
Centipede — $3 – $9 $7 – $40
Zoysia — $40 – $70 $8 – $40
Clover $4 — —

The sources do not line up on a per-pound ranking: Angi calls fescue the most affordable and Kentucky bluegrass the most expensive of the five varieties it compares, while HomeGuide and LawnStarter include specialty varieties that price above Kentucky bluegrass, such as zoysia at up to $70 and $40 per pound respectively.1,3,4 Angi and HomeAdvisor also price a 50-pound bag at $170 to $200 for bahia, $300 to $400 for Kentucky bluegrass, $100 to $250 for fescue, $230 to $380 for bermuda, and $80 to $200 for clover.1,2

How much seed a lawn needs

HomeGuide estimates 2 to 9 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet for a new lawn and 1 to 5 pounds when overseeding.3 Angi’s per-variety table for a new yard calls for 10 pounds of bahia or fescue, 4 pounds of Kentucky bluegrass, 2 pounds of bermuda or clover per 1,000 square feet — half that for an existing yard.1 HomeAdvisor’s FAQ puts tall fescue at 8 to 10 pounds per 1,000 square feet and finer blends at half to one pound.2 These figures are not directly comparable across guides, since each covers different varieties and lawn conditions; check the seed packaging for coverage guidelines, as HomeGuide advises.3

Labor

Angi and HomeAdvisor put the labor portion of a seeding or reseeding job at $250 to $350.1,2 By the hour, LawnStarter quotes $45 to $95, HomeGuide $50 to $100, and Bob Vila $35 to $75, a rate its page says generally applies to installing sod.3,4,5

Prep work and add-ons

Fertilizer $65 – $200 per treatment (HomeGuide); $80 – $380 (Bob Vila, 2024) HomeGuide, Bob Vila
Sprinkler system $1,639 – $3,571 (HomeAdvisor); $1,750 – $3,550 (Bob Vila, 2024) HomeAdvisor, Bob Vila
Aeration-plus-overseeding packages TruGreen $200 – $300 per treatment; Lawn Doctor $350 – $900 per treatment HomeGuide
Tree stump removal $80 – $250 per stump HomeGuide

Two notes on that table. Angi’s add-on table lists soil tests at $700 to $2,100 with the description “adds nutrients to promote lawn health,” while its leaf-removal row carries the description “determine soil type and nutrient balance” — the two descriptions read as if swapped, the soil-test price sits far above HomeGuide’s $10 to $40, and Angi’s page does not explain either.1,3 And Bob Vila’s new-lawn guide prices topsoil per cubic foot while HomeGuide prices it per cubic yard; the pages do not reconcile the unit difference.3,5

Seeding versus sod

Angi, HomeGuide, and Bob Vila each frame seeding as the cheaper route and sod as the faster one, on different figures. Angi compares seeding a new lawn at $450 to $1,800 against sod installation at $1,100 to $3,000.1 HomeAdvisor quotes the same $1,100 to $3,000 sod range.2 Bob Vila’s 2024 figures are hand seeding $400 to $1,600, hydroseeding $500 to $4,000, sodding at a $1,850 average, and artificial turf at $6 to $20 per square foot.5 HomeGuide puts lawn replacement by seed at $1 to $3 per square foot versus resodding at $1.50 to $4.3 For current per-foot sod pricing from five sources, see the sod installation cost guide.

DIY versus hiring a pro

DIY savings estimates come in different units. Angi and HomeAdvisor put the labor a homeowner skips at $250 to $350 per job; HomeAdvisor adds that a 50-pound bag of seed runs $100 to $400 and a push aerator rents for about $20 per hour.1,2 LawnStarter prices DIY tools and materials at $149 to $449 depending on spreader choice, with professional labor billed separately at $45 to $95 per hour.4 HomeGuide’s size table prices DIY seed alone at $10 to $20 per 1,000 square feet against $40 to $180 for professional reseeding.3
