Painting a deck costs an average of $1,000 for a 300-square-foot deck, with a published normal range of $500 – $2,000, according to HomeAdvisor.2 HomeAdvisor’s page also publishes $200 and $2,880 low/high ends. Angi, HomeAdvisor’s corporate sibling, publishes the same widget figures and a $1,000 average scoped to a 300 sq.ft. deck, but its page also carries a differing general project range; Angi’s general-range figures are omitted (see the sources table).1,2 Fixr (updated January 2025) separately reports a $1,000 national average scoped to painting a 200 sq.ft. deck with railings and lattice work, within an average range of $600 – $1,500, a $200 low end (newly built 100 sq.ft. deck, no prep), and a $2,000 high end (400 sq.ft. deck with full prep and premium paint).3 Angi and HomeAdvisor, corporate siblings, both scope their $1,000 average to a 300 sq.ft. deck, while Fixr scopes its $1,000 average to a different project – a 200 sq.ft. deck with railings and lattice work; matching dollar amounts do not make those equivalent projects. Fixr’s page and the sibling publishers’ pages state no shared sourcing. Prices are national averages*.

Lead paint in pre-1978 homes

Deck prep work such as sanding and stripping can disturb surfaces that may contain lead paint, such as old painted decking, railings, and trim. The EPA reports that homes built before 1978 are more likely to have lead-based paint (24% of homes built 1960–1977, 69% built 1940–1959, and 87% before 1940), and that renovation or repair activities that disturb painted surfaces in older homes may create large amounts of lead dust.4
